Ingredients for the Cake:

  1. 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  2. 2 cups of granulated sugar
  3. 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  4. 4 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder
  5. 2 sticks of unsalted butter
  6. 1 cup of boiling water
  7. 1/2 cup of sour cream
  8. 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  9. 2 eggs
  10. 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Ingredients for the Frosting:

  1. 1 3/4 sticks of unsalted butter
  2. 4 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder
  3. 6 tablespoons of milk
  4. 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  5. 1 pound of powdered sugar (approximately 3 3/4 cups)
  6. 1/2 cup of chopped pecans (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a large sheet pan (around 18×13 inches).
  2. For the cake: In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, and salt. In a saucepan, melt the butter, and stir in cocoa. Add boiling water, allow the mixture to boil for 30 seconds, and then turn off the heat. Pour this over the flour mixture, and stir lightly to cool.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the sour cream, baking soda, eggs, and vanilla. Add this to the chocolate/flour mixture and mix well. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. For the frosting: During the last few minutes of the cake’s baking time, make the frosting. Combine the butter, cocoa, and milk in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil, then remove from heat. Stir in the vanilla, powdered sugar, and pecans. Pour the frosting over the warm cake right after it comes out of the oven.
  5. Allow the cake to cool, allowing the frosting to set slightly. Cut into squares and serve.

This cake is known for its moistness and rich chocolate flavor, enhanced by the sour cream in the batter and the buttery, pecan-filled frosting. Enjoy your Texas Sheet Cake!
